How fortunate, were the people of Bisby, Jack thought. Until the now Duchess of Lindsey had opened her renowned restaurant, it had been a place time had forgotten. As Jack drove down the High Street, they had to slow for construction. Lumber stood in piles in the street, a cement mixer churned out cement for new pavement. He ‘d heard the project was being driven by the duchess, reputed to be a serial do-gooder.

They passed the last of Bisby’s stores and came upon a largish manor house. There was a car parked in front, a Jag. If he were to guess, Jack would say it was Lindsey’s. Interesting, that. If he and Livvy were to stop at The Ocular for lunch, would he be there? And what would it be like to see him?

For years, Jack had kept a distance from the duke. Charlie—he’d become Duke of Lindsey less than a year previous—was well-respected in London’s business community. And he’d been not much more than a boy, just as Jack had been, when the debacle had occurred.

He stepped on the gas and they cruised by. Their destination was not much farther, down a narrower lane. As Livvy sat straight up and leaned forward, he slowed and came to a stop in front of a white stone church with a modest bell tower.

Almost before Jack brought the car to a halt, she threw open her door and flung herself out. Without looking to see if he followed, she set out on the path to the graveyard off to the right.

“Wait, Livvy. Not there.”

She slowed and looked over her shoulder. “Why? We’re looking for a grave.”

“Jessamine will be interred inside the church.”

“That’s how they do it in England?” She retraced her steps back to him.

“If they were gentry, yes. They were buried beneath memorial brasses.”

She wrinkled her nose. “I’m adding that bit to my treasure trove of inconsequential knowledge,” she said, making for the church’s entrance, the hem of her red jumper flapping in her wake. Jack stood for a second to appreciate the way joy seemed embedded, even in her clothing. To her retreating back, he murmured, “Sweet Princess Leia, your enthusiasm has caught me.”

It had flagged there, in the car as they’d approached Bisby. He didn’t know why. Most shocking, though, was him coming to realize how her enthusiasm, or lack of it, impacted his.

He followed her inside the church and almost ran into her where she’d come to a halt at the entrance. A typical parish church, the space was all white-plastered walls and rounded vaulting. The pews were well-worn, darkened wood. At the front under the chancel stood a pulpit.

Placing one hand at the small of her back, he pointed with the other. “There. At the front. If there are any brasses, they’ll be there.”

She hurried forward. He followed.

There were quite a number of brasses, but none for Jessamine Beresford.

Livvy frowned. “Maybe Jessamine is in the graveyard after all.”

The graveyard was dank and dark. Tree branches dipped low in places, leaves piled up against gravestones.
